Can you wash towels and underwear together?

Sara Idenfors

It is possible to wash towels and underwear together, but it is important to consider a few things for the best results:

When it works:

- Temperature: Both towels and underwear (especially cotton) can usually be washed at 60°C, which is hot enough to kill most bacteria and remove dirt. See our laundry blog for more information about bacteria and washing.
- Color: Make sure that both the towels and underwear are in the same color group (e.g., whites or darks) to prevent colors from running and staining the clothes.

When you should avoid washing them together:

- Delicate underwear: If your underwear is made of sensitive materials such as lace or silk, or contains elastic bands that can wear out at high temperatures, you should wash it separately on a gentler cycle (delicates or hand wash) and at a lower temperature.
- Fabric softener: Towels may become softer with fabric softener, but fabric softener can negatively affect the elastic in underwear and reduce its durability. Fabric softener is not needed if you use All-Purpose Detergent; it makes clothes soft without fabric softener.

Recommendation:

Wash regular cotton underwear and towels together at 60°C without fabric softener. However, delicate underwear should be washed separately on a gentler cycle.

To achieve the best results and extend the lifespan of both your towels and underwear, it is important to adapt the washing to the material and its needs. Soapa's All-Purpose Laundry Detergent cleans effectively at low temperatures and keeps your garments soft without the need to use fabric softener. Wash cotton underwear and towels together at 60°C for convenience, and let our detergent take care of the rest!
