Drains and floor drains—the worst cleaning job! Here’s how to do it!

Drains and floor drains—the worst cleaning task! Here’s how to do it!

This isn’t a favorite task, and I think many people agree with me!

Drains—the floor drain in the shower isn’t exactly something you tackle with enthusiasm, but it is necessary from time to time. Many people think you need to use heavy-duty gloves, drain cleaner, boiling water, and a newspaper placed over it, but it’s easier than many people think to do without drain cleaner—and it actually gets properly clean when you do it properly!

Put on rubber gloves and get a waste bag so you have somewhere to put those unpleasant residues. And yes—throw them in the household garbage. There isn’t much, and since there are soap residues and a bit of everything else in there, we wouldn’t recommend putting it in the compost, especially if the compost will be used in the garden.
So now it’s time to get started!
1. Lift off the cover/grate over the floor drain.
2. Put on the rubber gloves and remove all the loose dirt found here. Put it in the waste bag.
3. Lift out the small “bucket” found in all newer floor drains. Open it and remove all the dirt.
4. Rinse with the shower hose.
5. Take the toilet brush (provided it’s in good condition); otherwise, get a special brush to use only for the floor drain. Pour in  liquid soap or use a dab of  bar soap. Scrub and rinse.

6. Now you can see how easy it is with just ordinary soap—no super-strong drain cleaner was needed.
7. Phew… that’s done, and now I promise I’ll do this a little more often, even though it isn’t the most enjoyable thing in the world 😉
