How do you do an autumn cleaning? A step-by-step guide.

Sara Idenfors

Here is a step-by-step guide to autumn cleaning that will help you prepare your home for the coming winter.

Plan your autumn cleaning

- Make a checklist: Write down the most important tasks you want to complete. Divide the cleaning into different areas: indoors, outdoors, and storage. This depends greatly on how you live. A house requires more time and care than an apartment. And you do not have to do everything on the list below; choose the tasks that are relevant and feel free to divide up the work. Doing everything at once becomes far too much.
If there are several people in the family, it is a good idea to help one another and take responsibility for individual tasks.

- Prioritize: Decide which areas need the most attention, such as places you have not cleaned during the summer or areas that require extra work before winter.

Clear out and organize storage

- Seasonal wardrobe change. Pack away your summer clothes and bring out your autumn and winter garments. Make sure to store the clothes in a way that protects them from moisture and pests.

- Do not put away dirty or damaged clothes. Wash and mend them before putting them away. It takes a little time, but it benefits both you and the environment/climate.

- Clear out the storage areas: Go through the storage area and organize it for winter. Make sure there is room for, and bring out, any winter items such as snow shovels, snow pushers, snow brooms, or winter tires.

- Clean ventilation grilles: Clean air intakes and ventilation grilles, especially if you are preparing to use the heating system more.
- Clean lamps and light sources. Dusty lamps provide less light, which is not ideal as the days get shorter.

Check the heating system

- Clean your radiators: Vacuum the radiators and make sure they are free of dust for better heat distribution.

- Service your heat pump or boiler: If you have a heat pump or boiler, it is a good idea to inspect and maintain it before winter begins. Any servicing you can do yourself is described in the instruction manual. All other servicing should be performed by a professional.

- Do you heat with firewood? If so, make sure the chimney sweep has visited according to the interval that applies to your home. Empty the ashes, clean the stove glass, and blacken the cast iron.

- If you haven't dealt with the firewood yet, now is the time.

Take care of outdoor surfaces

-Clear the gutters. Be sure to remove leaves and dirt from the gutters so rainwater can drain away properly.

- Protect outdoor furniture: Clean and cover outdoor furniture or store it indoors to protect it from winter weather. Scrubbing outdoor furniture with soap is a good idea. Spills and dirt from the summer easily settle in and create a breeding ground for mold and pests during the winter. Pots and garden tools also benefit from a soapy scrub before winter.

- Raking and gardening: Rake leaves off the lawn and clear the flower beds. If you have a garden, be sure to cut back perennials and prepare the plants for winter. Do not leave anything that mice and other pests can feast on during the winter. The less food pests have, the less they will be attracted to your home.

- Scrub the deck with soap to reduce the risk of mold and algae taking hold during the winter. Clean surfaces are less easily attacked by pests.

Clean windows and window frames

- Wash the windows: Windows often get dirty during the summer. Wash them both inside and out to let in more light during the darker months. Window cleaner from Soapa makes the job quick and easy.

Dust and clean thoroughly

- Dust ceilings, walls, and lamps: Dust can collect everywhere during the summer. Use a feather duster or microfiber cloth to dust high surfaces. Air out the rooms and vacuum after dusting.

- Wash rugs. If you have rugs that do not fit in the washing machine, be sure to wash them outdoors with soap and a garden hose before winter arrives.

Give the floors a thorough clean

- Vacuum and mop the floors: Give all floors a thorough vacuuming and wet mopping.

- Clean under furniture: Fall cleaning is a great opportunity to vacuum under sofas, beds, and other large pieces of furniture. If you do a thorough clean this fall, you should be set all the way until the big Christmas clean.

Clean the kitchen thoroughly

- Refrigerator and freezer: Take the opportunity to defrost the freezer if necessary and clean both the refrigerator and freezer inside. Be sure to use unscented soap for this and anywhere else you store or handle food.

- Clean the range hood and oven: The range hood and oven can become dirty over the year. Clean the filter and the inside of the oven thoroughly.

- Go through the pantry: Check for old or expired food and remove it. Wipe down the shelves and reorganize the food.

Care for furniture and textiles

- Vacuum upholstered furniture: Use the upholstery attachment on your vacuum cleaner to clean sofas, armchairs, and other upholstered furniture.

- Wash curtains and textiles: Wash curtains, cushions, and blankets to freshen up your home for autumn.

Check doors and windows

- Seal windows and doors: Check the weatherstripping around windows and doors to make sure it is airtight before winter. This also helps reduce heat loss.

- Put up window insulation wool if needed; this applies to old houses. If you have older windows, consider putting up window insulation wool for extra insulation.

Finally, decorate for autumn

- Once the cleaning is finished, you can add some autumn ambiance by decorating with tealights, cushions in autumn colors, and perhaps a few pumpkins or leaf decorations.

With this step-by-step guide, autumn cleaning becomes easier, and you get a fresh, warm home for the coming cold months.
