How do you remove stains from the carpet?
Sara IdenforsRemoving stains from a carpet can be a little challenging, but with the right technique and products, it usually works well. Of course, it depends largely on the type of stain and the type of carpet. We are happy to recommend our stain guide, where different stains and how to remove them are listed in alphabetical order. You can find it here.
Here is a step-by-step guide to removing stains from a carpet:
1. Act quickly
- The sooner you tackle the stain, the greater the chance of removing it completely. Try to treat the stain as soon as possible.
2. Remove excess material
- If there is spilled liquid or solid particles, use a spoon or cloth to carefully remove as much as possible without rubbing the stain into the carpet.
3. Dab the stain
- Use a clean, white cloth or paper towel to gently dab the stain and absorb as much liquid as possible. Do not rub, as this can spread the stain and damage the fibres.
4. Saturate the textile fibres
- Regardless of the stain or material, the carpet’s textile fibres need to be saturated with water—they need to be filled with water in order to release the stain. This is more difficult with wall-to-wall carpeting. A loose rug can be placed over a container. For example, place an ovenproof dish beneath the stain itself and try to pour water through the stain into the container.
5. Choose the right cleaning product
6. Apply cleaning product
- Dab the cleaning solution onto the stain with a clean cloth. Work from the outer edges of the stain inward to prevent it from spreading. If other instructions are provided in the stain-removal guide, follow them.

7. Rinse and dry
- Rinse using the method described above, with a container underneath if possible. If not, dab the area with clean water to rinse away the cleaning product. Use a new cloth to absorb as much water as possible. You may want to place a thick towel over the area and put something heavy on it to draw out moisture for a few hours.
8. Repeat as needed
- If the stain does not disappear completely, repeat the process. Some stains may require several treatments.
9. Allow to dry thoroughly
- Make sure the area dries completely before walking on it or putting the furniture back to prevent mold or the stain from returning.
Following these steps carefully will help you effectively remove stains from your rug without damaging it.
1. Can you use a pressure washer on the rug?
It is possible if you have access to an outdoor washing area or a wash bay, provided that the rug can withstand it. Many rugs will not withstand such treatment without being damaged.
2. Can you put rugs in the washing machine?
Answer: Yes, if the care instructions say so; no, if they do not.
3. Can you repair and clean genuine rugs yourself?
Answer: No, genuine rugs are very expensive and need to be handled by a professional.
