We spend a large part of the day in bed, so it is important that the bedroom is clean and fresh, and that the bed is too!

We would like to begin this post by pointing out that if you suspect you have a dust mite allergy, you should see a doctor and find out whether this is the case. A dust mite allergy can never be completely eliminated through cleaning, but there is dust-mite-proof bedding for allergy sufferers, so find out whether you are allergic if you suspect it.
Of course, you may sneeze for other reasons too, in which case cleaning is certainly not a bad idea!

Here are some tips for cleaning the bedroom and a practical step-by-step list in 8 simple points.

  • Remove the bed linen and wash it at a minimum of 60*C. Do not buy bed linen that cannot be washed at a minimum of 60*C. Pillows and duvets should also be washable at 60 degrees. When it comes to beds, ventilation is essential. Innerspring mattresses with a wooden frame and a core of coils are very good, while foam mattresses should be placed on bases that are effectively ventilated, such as slatted bases. Mites thrive when moisture remains in the mattress. Freezing – Freezing mites to death is very difficult, but if you live somewhere that allows you to store duvets and pillows at temperatures below -18*C for at least 48 hours, it will have an effect. Tumble-drying – There is no evidence that mites can be eliminated by tumble-drying; it simply never gets warm enough.
  • Remove rubbish, old newspapers, and anything else that collects dust. Sort it and throw it away.
  • Dust and air the room thoroughly. Also make sure the room is well ventilated, as poor ventilation means that moisture remains in the room and in the bed.
  • Vacuum thoroughly, including the bed frame, where a lot of dust can accumulate.

  • Dry the floor.
  • Now take care of the mattress topper. If you can take it outside, air it out and beat it, that’s great. You can also take the opportunity to remove any stains. Remember that the mattress must be completely dry when you put it back on the bed. If you are unable to take the mattress outside, we recommend the baking soda trick.

* Sprinkle an even layer of baking soda over the mattress.

* Leave it for at least 30 minutes.
* Vacuum up the baking soda.

  • Stains: Mix equal parts water, salt and baking soda. Gently work on the stain with a soft cloth and sponge. You may need to repeat this a couple of times. Remember to dab the stain with a dry cloth or paper towel to absorb as much water as possible. For greasy stains such as baby formula, use soap and treat the stain in the same way.
  • Change the bedding. This should be done at least every 14 days. Not making the bed has long been suggested as a way to get rid of dust mites. This is partly true: do not make the bed immediately when you get up. Let the bed dry and air out before making it, BUT you can certainly make the bed with a clear conscience as long as it is not damp.

  • Bonus tip. If, for some reason, you have a bad smell in the bedroom that has settled into, for example, wallpaper and walls, you can place a small bowl of vinegar in the room. The vinegar will “eat up” the bad smell within a day or so.

Here we show you how to do it in a video clip
