1. Why soap instead of oil?
Oiled surfaces often darken over the years and can feel slightly sticky when dust or pollen settles on them, making them difficult to keep fresh.
Instead, the soap creates a naturally light, warm-gray finish reminiscent of a classic scrubbed floor indoors.
Because the surface becomes matte and smooth, it is also significantly easier to keep clean, as pollen and dirt do not stick to it in the same way as they do to an oiled surface.
The difference: Soap creates a naturally matte, light, barefoot-friendly surface, while oil often becomes glossy, darkens over time, and attracts sticky dirt.
2. Superfatting – the secret behind the protection
To properly treat and protect your patio, you need a superfatted soap.
Superfatted soaps, such as Västerbottenssåpa, contain excess fat that penetrates and nourishes the natural material from within.
This extra fat thoroughly saturates the wood and provides the very best protection against dirt, moisture, and the drying out that otherwise leads to unsightly cracks.
The importance of fat: A superfatted soap deeply saturates the wood and replenishes its natural oils, making the wood more resistant to stains and cracking.
3. Say goodbye to algae and moss
Algae, lichens, and mold thrive in acidic environments, but soap is naturally alkaline, which these growths dislike.
By scrubbing with deck soap, you not only clean the surface for the time being, but also leave behind an environment that effectively and environmentally friendly delays the regrowth of algae.
Alkaline protection: The soap’s alkaline properties inhibit the growth of algae, lichens, and mold, helping to keep the surface clean and protected for longer.
4. Do not use a pressure washer
It may be tempting to use a pressure washer, but don’t. The powerful pressure can break down the wood fibers, causing splinters and slivers that make it impossible to walk barefoot without hurting yourself.
If a lot of algae has accumulated on the decking, it is much better to use a coarse levang (scrubbing brush) and scrub thoroughly with soap and water.
Our tip: A pressure washer damages the wood and creates splinters; instead, choose a brush and soap to preserve the soft, safe surface.
5. How to do it: Step by step
For the best results, divide the work into two steps: cleaning and treatment.
Clean: Scrub away algae and dirt with hot water and soap (approximately 100 ml per 10 l of water). The hot water is needed to actually dissolve dirt and stains.
Treat: Then mix 1 l of soap with 10 l of cold water and mop it over the surface. The cold water closes the pores, keeping the fat in the wood. Repeat until the wood is completely saturated and feels smooth.
The method: Use hot water and soap to clean, then treat the wood by saturating it with cold water and plenty of soap.
