Can you clean tiles and tile grout with soap?

Sara Idenfors

In today's text, I share my experience of cleaning tiles and grout in the bathroom with soft soap. There is sometimes confusion about whether bathrooms can withstand soft soap, even though it is a type of soap. I will explain the process I use, so follow along!

Can you clean tiles and grout with soft soap?

Yes, soft soap works excellently for cleaning both tiles and grout—especially in bathrooms and kitchens. Soapa, which is naturally super-fatted, effectively dissolves dirt, grease, and soap residue without drying out the material or skin.

For grout cleaning:

– Use a soft brush and apply bathroom soft soap directly.
– Scrub the grout thoroughly and let the soft soap work for a few minutes.
– Then rinse with warm water or wipe with a damp cloth.

Soft soap is a gentle yet effective alternative to harsh chemicals—especially on natural materials.
Tip: Repeat the treatment regularly to keep the tiles fresh without damaging the surface.

Can tiles and grout withstand soft soap?

Yes, they do. Soft soap is essentially a type of soap—they are very closely related. Both soft soap and bar soap are made in a similar way: with fat and lye. The difference is that sodium hydroxide is used to make solid soap, while potassium hydroxide is used to make liquid soft soap.

No one would build a bathroom with materials that cannot withstand soap, and the same applies to soft soap. Tiles, floor tiles, and grout are made to withstand precisely this type of cleaning.

At home, we have a fully tiled bathroom with light gray grout that has been in place for over 20 years. During that time, I have scrubbed it with soft soap many times—probably more often than most people. The grout is still in good condition.

In the example below, I deliberately left part of the grout unscrubbed to show before-and-after pictures illustrating the difference after a simple scrub with Soapa.

I use a soft brush, bathroom soap in a bottle and warm water. Then I simply rinse it off and let the wall dry. This is what it looks like afterward!
