Does your limescale remover really work?
Sara IdenforsRemoving limescale from shower walls is one of the most common cleaning challenges in bathrooms with hard water. White spots, a gray film, and dull glass that never feels completely clean—even though you have just cleaned it.
But limescale on glass does not have to be permanent or difficult to remove. With the right product and method, you can clean the shower wall effectively without using harsh, corrosive chemicals.
Why does limescale form on shower walls?
Limescale deposits form when water with high levels of calcium and magnesium—known as hard water—dries on a surface. This is common in many parts of Sweden.
When the water evaporates, the dissolved minerals turn into solid deposits, primarily calcium carbonate. These easily adhere to glass, plastic, and tiles.
In the shower, limescale also mixes with soap residue and grease, giving the deposits an even stronger grip. The result is the white or gray, dull surface we call limescale.
Because the process occurs every time the shower is used, limescale gradually builds up if you do not clean the shower wall regularly.

The best way to remove limescale in the shower
When it comes to removing limescale in the bathroom, the most effective approach is to use a product specifically designed to dissolve limescale deposits.
A gel-based limescale remover is particularly effective on shower walls because it does not run off immediately, but stays on vertical surfaces and has a longer working time.
How to remove limescale step by step:
1. Apply the gel directly to the limescale stains with a cloth or sponge.
2. Leave it to work for 15–20 minutes on heavy deposits so the limescale softens.
3. Gently scrub with a soft scrub sponge, brush or eco-fiber cloth.
4. Rinse thoroughly with water and wipe with a dry cloth for clear, shiny glass.
Thanks to its gel consistency, the product is more effective than thin, runny cleaning products, which otherwise quickly run off the glass.
Does it really work?
Yes, it actually does, but to really prove that this is the case, we sent our limescale remover to a testing laboratory. Here you can see the result.

This is how the lab determined that following the instructions on the bottle removes 98% of the limescale in the test. That is a very good result for a limescale remover; it is actually 10 percentage points better than the second-best product in the same test.
Tips for preventing limescale on glass
Would you like to reduce the need for powerful limescale removal? Then preventive cleaning is key. Wipe down the shower walls after every shower. Repeat the treatment if the limescale is heavy, or let the product work for a little longer. Avoid using acidic cleaning products on sensitive natural stone such as marble – always test on a small area first. Regular wiping reduces limescale buildup and makes future cleaning considerably easier.
