Guide: How to soap your deck / patio

Sara Idenfors

Instructions:

1.
Scrub away algae, lichen, and dirt using HOT water and soft soap. The deck soap from Soapa is super-fatted and is therefore a good choice. The hot water together with the soap helps algae, lichen, stains, and marks in the wood come loose.

Use a stiff brush. If the surface is large, a deck scrub brush is useful to have. A deck scrub brush is a scrubbing brush that can be attached to a handle. You can find the handle at your nearest hardware store.

2. Wipe or rinse the surface. No loose dirt from scrubbing should remain on the surface when it is time to begin treating it. If the deck is new and clean, however, you do not need to rinse or wipe it; start directly with step three.

3. Mix approximately 1l soap with 10l of COLD water (in a scrubbing bucket). Soak a scrubbing cloth in the soapy water, then place it over the deck scrub brush and go over the entire deck. The soapy water should soak into the wood. You can also work in the cold soap mixture with the soft deck scrub brush.

More repetitions result in a smoother surface. You will feel when the wood is saturated and you are happy with the result.

Repeat step 3 for an even smoother, more saturated surface.
