Household tip: how to easily sort waste from an ordinary trash bin

Sara Idenfors

Everything you need:

  • Regular garbage bags with handles
  • Compostable corn bags with handles
  • Waste bin
  • Glue gun and glue
  • Two plastic caps

Step-by-step instructions

1. Plug in the glue gun so it heats up, then glue one of the caps to the upper edge. See the picture.

2. Secure the compostable bag, then measure where cap 2 should go (opposite the first one), and attach the handles to the second bag once the glue has dried. It will only take a moment!

Done—it’s not more difficult than that

You have now made it easy to do the right thing! A waste bin with two bags and two compartments keeps everything from ending up in the same container, allowing you to sort compostable waste into the biodegradable corn bag and plastic into the other. Naturally, you can also use other bags to sort other materials. In this example, one bag was for compostable waste and one for plastic—paper recycling is separate in this case, so this was all that was needed to make it easy to do the right thing!
