In what order should you clean?

In what order should you clean?

I get this question sometimes, and the answer is:

1. Throw away—gather all the rubbish, sort it, and throw it away. Empty all wastebaskets and rubbish bags. Everything that shouldn't remain needs to go. Paper recycling, deposit cans, plastic, metal, rubbish, and compost. This is absolutely the first thing you do.

2. Put everything that belongs in the dishwasher into the dishwasher and start it.

3. Gather laundry, towels, bed linens, and clothes that need washing—and take them to the laundry.

4. Then tackle the dirtiest areas first: clean the bathroom, and don't take cloths, brushes, and bottles into other rooms. Keep the bathroom cleaning supplies in the bathroom.

5. The kitchen: scrub the sink, stove, countertops, etc.

6. Top to bottom: Dust from top to bottom, wipe the windows, radiators, and baseboards.

7. Finally, do the floors: vacuum and mop.

Questions and answers

1. In what order should you clean?

The simple answer is: sort/throw away, wash dishes, do laundry, dust/wipe, and finally vacuum/mop the floors.

2. Doesn't top to bottom apply anymore?

Absolutely, that applies when you wipe and dust, but there's little point in dusting if you haven't tidied up first.

3. Haven't we forgotten the baseboards now?

You should wipe the baseboards too, but you don't need to do it as often. It's perfectly fine to skip it sometimes.
