Is recycling good for the environment?

Is recycling good for the environment?

The answer is YES—recycling is almost always absolutely the best thing for the environment!

The Earth's resources are not infinite, and some materials and natural resources are not regenerated! The more of us who use them, the more important it becomes to recycle, reuse, and use things again and again.

Unfortunately, we're not very good at recycling!

In fact, half of everything we throw away—which ends up in landfills—could instead have been recycled, so we have some work to do!

In this blog, we'll go through a few simple things you can easily do to get better at sorting waste and better at not producing rubbish!

We do NOT like the trends that claim you'll be happy if you “throw away everything you own” and live minimally. Everything produced has cost money, affected the environment, and consumed energy, so throw things away responsibly.

Don't throw away things you can reuse, repurpose, or know you'll need at a later time.
That simply means you'll need to rush out and buy a new one fairly soon, which isn't good for the environment.

Did you know that aluminum, glass, and steel can be reused indefinitely?

It can be remade again and again without deteriorating.

Making things from recycled materials always requires less energy than making new products from raw materials.

For example, making an aluminum can from recycled aluminum requires 95% less energy than making a can from new aluminum.

If you still need to get rid of something, it should be recycled if possible.

If you're unsure how, Google it—the internet is your best friend here.
There's plenty of useful information that's easy to find.
Many of us are already good at sorting waste at home. With proper containers for things like food scraps = compost, plastic, paper, and metal, there isn't much left that ends up at the landfill. That's good! But some of us also have a sad wastebasket (perhaps the one under the desk at work) where apple cores, plastic, and paper all end up in the same bag.

Here we'll show you a very simple way to solve that problem!

Here's how to create simple waste sorting directly in your wastebasket!

DIY waste sorter – Household tips, waste sorting

You need

  • Wastebasket
  • Glue gun + hot-melt glue
  • Compostable corn bags with handles
  • Two plastic caps
  • Regular garbage bags

Here's how

1. Heat up the glue gun and glue one of the caps to the upper edge. See the picture.

2. Attach the first bag and measure where the second cap should go (roughly directly opposite, on the side opposite the first one).

3. Glue the second cap in place and attach the other bag.

4. Now you have a wastebasket with two bags in it. Two compartments. Sort compostable waste into the biodegradable green bag and plastic into the other one.
Of course, you can use the same method with other bags for different types of sorting.

Where can I find compostable bags?

Here they are, made in Norway using only corn!
