In our daily lives, car seat belts are often exposed to considerable dirt and stains. It is not uncommon for them to start smelling bad due to spills from drinks or sweat seeping into the tightly woven textile. To keep them clean and fresh, they need a thorough cleaning at regular intervals. Car seat belts tend to get dirty and even start to smell bad. This is because they fit tightly against the body and are made of textile—lots of tightly woven threads that trap and hold ice cream, soft drinks, coffee, and sweat.

Here's how to clean them most easily:

1. Pull out the entire belt and secure it with a bag clip. Now you can clean it calmly without risking the belt retracting. Clever, right?! 😉

2. Wipe the entire belt with a damp cloth and soap. This is usually sufficient. Remember to wipe both sides of the belt and be a little extra thorough in the middle, where the belt has the most contact with the body.

3. If the belt is soiled with sweat or cigarette smoke, it is more difficult; you may need to use soapy water and a soft brush and gently “scrub” the entire belt.

4. Wipe it with a damp cloth.

5. Leave the belt laid out to dry in the extended position before carefully letting it roll back in. Do not release it so that the belt rolls in rapidly, as it may twist.

Remember not to do this when it is below freezing outside, as any remaining water may freeze and get into the retractor mechanism.

Watch the clip below and we'll show you how!

 Questions and answers

- Why do car seat belts tend to get dirty and smell bad?

Car seat belts fit tightly against the body and are made of textile, making them susceptible to stains from ice cream, soft drinks, coffee, and sweat, which can cause unpleasant odors.

- When is it especially important to be thorough when cleaning the car seat belt?

It is especially important to be thorough when cleaning the middle of the belt, where it has the most contact with the body and where stains and odors can accumulate.

- Why is it not suitable to clean the car seat belt when it is below freezing outside?

In freezing temperatures, any water remaining from cleaning may freeze and get into the belt's retractor mechanism, which can cause problems with the belt's function.
