How to clean limescale from shower walls with the right product

Sara Idenfors

Limescale deposits on shower walls are a classic problem in bathrooms with hard water. The white spots and dull surface make the glass look dirty, even after regular cleaning. With the right method and an effective cleaning product, you can quickly make the shower wall shiny and free from limescale—without using harsh, corrosive chemicals.

Why does limescale stick to my shower walls?

Limescale deposits form when water containing dissolved calcium and magnesium salts dries on surfaces. In many parts of Sweden, the water is what is known as hard water, meaning it contains a high concentration of these minerals.

When water hits shower walls and then evaporates, the dissolved salts turn into solid deposits—mainly calcium carbonate. These adhere easily to glass and plastic, especially when combined with soap residue and grease, which act as a binding surface. The result is the white or grey, often dull coating we call limescale.

Because the process occurs every time the shower is used, limescale gradually builds up if the surface is not cleaned or is not cleaned regularly.

The best way to remove limescale in the shower

A safe and effective way to remove limescale is to use a product that is specially developed for this purpose. With a gel-based limescale remover, you can treat the wall without the product simply running off the surface.

How to do it:

1. Apply the gel directly to the limescale stains with a cloth or a sponge. The gel is thick and stays in place on vertical surfaces.

2. Leave it to work for 15–20 minutes on heavy limescale deposits so that the limescale softens.

3. Scrub gently with a soft scouring sponge, brush or eco-fiber cloth.

4. Rinse thoroughly with water and dry with a dry cloth for a crystal-clear result.

The gel is designed not to run off immediately, allowing it to work on the surface for longer compared with conventional liquid cleaning products.

Tips for the best results

- If the shower wall has a lot of limescale, repeat the treatment or let the gel work a little longer.

- Avoid using the product on sensitive natural stones such as marble, as acidic agents can negatively affect the surface—always test on a small area first.

- For daily cleaning, regular wiping after showering can help prevent limescale buildup.
