How to gently clean a gravestone with Soapa

Amanda Jonsson

With Soapa and simple tools, you can clean a gravestone in a safe, sustainable, and respectful way. It is a thoughtful choice—for the memory, the material, and the environment

Cleaning a gravestone is a way to show care and respect. At the same time, it is important to do so gently, for the stone, the environment, and yourself. With Soapa and the right method, you can effectively remove dirt, algae, and buildup—without harsh chemicals that risk damaging the material or the surrounding nature.

Before you begin—keep this in mind

- Check what material the gravestone is made of (granite, marble, limestone, etc.).

- Avoid harsh chemicals, acids, and pressure washers—they can cause permanent damage.

- Clean only on a cloudy day or in the shade, so the stone does not dry too quickly.

Step by step: Clean a gravestone with soap

Step 1: Sweep away loose dirt

Begin by carefully sweeping leaves, sand, moss, and other loose dirt from the gravestone and the surrounding area. Use a soft brush or broom to avoid scratching the surface.

Step 2: Prepare soapy water

Mix approximately 1 dl of Soapa with 3 liters of lukewarm water in a bucket. Soap effectively dissolves dirt and growth while remaining gentle on both the stone and the environment.

Step 3: Scrub gently

If the gravestone is durable and heavily soiled, a small stiff scrubbing brush can be used. For more delicate stones, a soft brush. Dip the brush in the soapy water and scrub using gentle, circular motions. Work methodically and let the soap do the work.

Step 4: Let the soap work

If the stone is particularly dirty, you can let the soapy water work for a few minutes. Do not let it dry completely—moisten the surface again if needed.

Step 5: Rinse thoroughly

Rinse the gravestone thoroughly with clean water, preferably using a jug or bucket. Make sure no soap residue remains, especially in cracks and lettering.

Step 6: Clean around the stone

Take the opportunity to wash dirt from the base, edges, and any stone border around the grave. Soap also works well on paving stones.

Step 7: Allow to air-dry

Allow the gravestone to air-dry. Avoid drying it with cloths that may shed lint or leave fibers behind.
