Snow-clean your rugs. 6 easy steps—here’s how!

How to clean your rugs with snow!
Cleaning rugs doesn’t have to involve chemicals or expensive professional cleaning. During winter, you can instead use a clever and eco-friendly trick: cleaning your rugs with snow. Snow works as a natural cleaning agent that lifts dirt, dust, and odors from the rug’s fibers. By laying the rug out in cold, dry snow, trampling the snow into it, brushing it, and beating out the dirt, you can leave your rugs fresh and clean. In this blog post, we show you exactly how to clean rugs with snow—perfect after the holiday festivities!

In any case, we have more than enough snow for all the rugs you could possibly have.
This should be done when the snow is fairly cold—preferably not wet and slushy. It is also essential that the ground underneath is frozen, so you don’t get dirt from the ground into the rug. If there isn’t much snow, you can lay the rug on a patio floor and shovel snow over it. We took our rugs out onto the lake. The ice is naturally clean and clear, and there is plenty of space.

Here’s how:
- 1. Roll up your rugs and take them to a suitable location. Bring a broom.
- 2. Shake the rugs out thoroughly, then lay them in the snow. If the rug has a top and bottom side, place the top side—the side you walk on—face down in the snow. Rag rugs can be “done on both sides.”
- 3. Walk across the rug so that snow gets into it, but make sure there is nothing sharp or dirty underneath.
- 4. Turn the rug over and repeat if it is a rag rug.
- 5. Brush off the snow with a broom. Work the broom back and forth so that it removes both the snow AND the dirt. Turn the rug over and repeat until you are satisfied.
- 6. Shake out the rug and beat it a couple of times with the broom.
Since most of the snow falls out of the rug when you beat or shake it, it won’t be particularly wet when you bring it inside. If you have a beautiful parquet floor, you should still hang it up to dry for a while before putting it back. You’ll notice that the snow you beat or brush off the rug is discolored, which is a good indication that the method works.
Unless something unexpected happens, this cleaning will last all the way until spring, when it’s time to scrub the rugs on the dock again. Bringing a box of clean, fresh rugs back inside feels good.
