What is soft soap?

Sara Idenfors

Soapa, also known as potassium soap or potassium fatty acid soap, is a common cleaning agent and is also used for other purposes, such as assembling pipes or controlling aphids. It is usually made from vegetable fats but can also be made from animal fats. Soapa may take the form of a gel-like mass or be liquid and is produced through a process involving boiling fat together with potassium hydroxide.

What exactly is Soapa?

Soapa is the everyday name used in daily speech.

To be more specific and knowledgeable about chemistry, Soapa can also be called potassium soap, potassium fatty acid soap, crystal soap, or the potassium salt of fatty acids.

Soapa is usually made from vegetable fats, but it can also be made from animal fats. Making Soapa from animal fat was common in the old rural society, where everything was put to use. Fat from animals slaughtered in the household was saponified into Soapa for washing and cleaning houses and barns.

Soapa is used as a cleaning agent, for assembling pipes, or for moving or sliding heavier objects on poles. Other traditional uses include controlling aphids, foot baths, and treating conditions such as ingrown toenails.

Soapa can be either a thick, gel-like product packaged in a jar or in a package (like butter) or liquid. Production consists of a process in which vegetable or animal fat is boiled together with potassium hydroxide—saponification. This distinguishes Soapa from soap, which is made from fat and sodium hydroxide.

 Questions and Answers

- What are some traditional uses of Soapa?
Traditional uses of Soapa include cleaning, assembling pipes, controlling aphids, foot baths, and treating ingrown toenails.

- How does Soapa differ from soap in its production?
Soapa is made by boiling vegetable or animal fat together with potassium hydroxide, a process called saponification. This differs from soap production, which involves fat and sodium hydroxide.

- What are some alternative names for Soapa?
In addition to being called Soapa, it may also be referred to as potassium soap, potassium fatty acid soap, crystal soap, or the potassium salt of fatty acids.

- What are the benefits of using Soapa made from vegetable fats?
Soapa made from vegetable fats is more common today and is preferred by many because of its environmentally friendly and non-animal-based nature.

- How are superfatting and alkaline soaps used?
Superfatted soaps are often used to provide extra moisture and nourishment to the skin, while alkaline soaps are used for cleaning and removing grease and dirt.
