What does soap contain?

Sara Idenfors

Soap is a traditional and effective cleaning product made from three simple ingredients: fat, potassium hydroxide, and water. The chemical reaction that occurs between these is called saponification (or soap-making), and the result is a natural cleaning product that is gentle on both the environment and the user. Common fats used to make soap include tall oil, linseed oil, and rapeseed and corn oil.

What is soap made of?

Soap is made from fat, potassium hydroxide, and water. These are mixed and boiled so that a chemical process called saponification or soap-making begins. Chemically speaking, finished soap is a compound of fatty acids. Nothing more is needed to make soap.

Why are there more ingredients in some soaps?

Manufacturers commonly add fragrance after saponification, because scents do not survive the soap-making process itself. However, it is worth paying attention to how much fragrance is added. A large amount of fragrance may mean that the product contains many unnecessary chemicals.

Tip: Strongly scented cleaning products often mask bad odors rather than actually cleaning. If you want truly clean results, choose unscented products or those with a very mild fragrance.

Other additives are not necessary, although preservatives and borax may be present.

Which fats are used in soap?

The fat used to boil the soap varies. Animal fat as a base was common in the old self-sufficient farming communities. Common fats today include:

1. Tall oil – a by-product of the pulp and paper industry that is saponified into pine soap (usually colored green soap today).

2- Linseed oil – used, among other things, to make linseed oil soap.

3. Rapeseed and corn oil – used in Soapa, which is made from upcycled oil from deep fryers. The oil is purified in a cyclone cleaner and saponified into a natural, non-toxic soap.

What does Soapa contain?

Soapa is soap made by boiling rapeseed and corn oil, an upcycling process in which oil from deep fryers is purified in a cyclone cleaner and then saponified. Soapa contains no preservatives. All packages with black labels are also completely fragrance-free.

Questions and Answers

1. What are the main ingredients in soap?
The main ingredients in soap are fat, potassium hydroxide, and water.

2. Why are fragrances usually added after saponification?
Fragrances are usually added after saponification because saponification is a strong chemical reaction that does not preserve the scents from the original ingredients. It is important to be aware of the amount of fragrance added to products to avoid excessive exposure to chemicals.

3. What are some common bases used to make soap?
Common bases for making soap include animal fat, tall oil, linseed oil, and rapeseed and corn oil.
