Do as wood expert Malin does—scrub your deck with soap for a silvery-smooth, splinter-free finish

Do as wood expert Malin does—scrub your deck with soap for a silvery-smooth, splinter-free finish

For many years, I have worked with wooden floors, both through direct sales from flooring manufacturers such as Siljan Golv and through house companies such as Tomoku Hus and Anebyhus.

I have sold a substantial amount of wood flooring, and the question customers kept asking was always the same: should you choose oil, soap, or lacquer as a surface treatment?

As a wood technician, I have learned how wood works in depth, and after personally trying everything from sticky oils to hard lacquers, I have concluded that soap scrubbing is by far the best option for both indoor floors and patios.

I stopped encapsulating old dirt with oil

I remember so clearly the first time I replaced the oil can with the soap bucket. Goodness, what a load of black grime I scrubbed away!

It turned out to be dirt and pollutants that, for several years, we had simply been sealing in under layer after layer of oil.

When you brush new oil onto a dirty deck, you seal in grime and dirt under layer after layer of oil. Soap works the opposite way—it lifts the dirt to the surface so it can be properly rinsed away. My previously gray-black deck slowly transformed into a silvery, smooth surface that not only looks clean but actually is.

Deep cleaning: The soap works according to the classic scrubbed-floor principle, where you scrub the wood clean and saturate it in one and the same process.

No sticky surface: Unlike an oiled surface that attracts pollen and dust, a soaped surface repels dirt and is extremely easy to clean.

The barefoot feeling is unbeatable for the whole family

The absolute best thing about my method is the freedom it gives us in summer. In the past, when we oiled the deck, no one was allowed to walk on it for a long time, and no one wanted to go barefoot because the sticky residue from the oil clung to the soles of their feet and was tracked onto the parquet floor in the living room.

With the soap, we can walk barefoot as soon as the surface has dried.

Our deck is now 17 years old, and so far, no one in the family has gotten splinters in their feet.

Eco-friendly and safe: By choosing a natural soap, you avoid substances that are harmful to people, animals, or nature, as well as the fossil-based oil often found in traditional products."

My pressure sores can “heal” themselves

When I worked with floors, I often explained the difference between sealed and living surfaces to my customers.

A lacquered floor is completely sealed—if it gets a dent or a scratch, the damage is permanent because the surface is closed. But a soaped patio allows the wood to breathe.

If I get an ugly mark from a piece of furniture or a dropped object, I can simply place a wet cloth over the spot.

Because the surface is not clogged, the wood absorbs the moisture, the fibers rise slightly, and the mark may become less visible or disappear completely.

Living material: A soaped surface preserves the wood’s natural beauty and allows it to move naturally with changes in weather instead of trapping it.

I save time by washing and treating at the same time

Previously, I thought oil was the fastest option, but in reality, oil treatment requires extensive preparation: you first clean the wood and then have to wait for it to dry completely before you can start applying the oil with a brush.

With an overfatted deck soap, I clean and recondition the wood with oil in essentially the same step.

If I happen to use too much soap and the surface feels slippery, I simply rinse off the excess with water. With too much oil, however, it can leave unsightly, sticky patches that attract dirt.

Effective maintenance: Scrub the wood clean and rinse away all the dirt. This makes the wood harder and more dirt-repellent, helping keep algae away. If algae still appear in damp corners, you can prevent them with a little vinegar or white wine vinegar.
