1. Master the temperature: Warm for cleaning, cold for protection
To succeed with soap scrubbing, you need to understand that the water temperature determines what the soap actually does to the wood.
Hot water is used together with the soap to open up the wood and dissolve the dirt and growth that have accumulated over the winter, such as algae and lichen.
Once the decking is clean, switch to cold water and soap. This makes the wood absorb the excess fat in the soap instead of merely being cleaned.
Cleaning: Mix 1 dl of soap with 10 liters of hot water to scrub away algae and dirt.
Treatment: Mix 1 liter of soap with 10 liters of cold water to saturate the wood fibers deeply.
2. Choose the right type of soap for re-greasing
Many people believe that all soap is only for cleaning, but your patio requires a soap that also treats the wood.
An overfatted soap acts as a natural treatment by saturating the wood with oil instead of merely washing the surface. This gives the decking a soft, barefoot feel and durable protection that helps prevent both drying out and splinters.
Nourishing properties: The excess oil nourishes the wood and provides natural protection against moisture, cold, and sunlight.
Final result: The more coats you apply with the rich mixture, the more saturated and “waxed” the surface will feel.
3. Be kind to the wood: Skip the machines
It may be tempting to use a pressure washer to speed up the work, but it is a shortcut that often damages the wood. The high pressure roughens the wood fibers and makes the surface splintered and covered in splinters, making it impossible to walk barefoot.
A stiff scrubbing brush (levang) together with soap is more than sufficient to remove even stubborn algae growth without damaging the wood.
Gentleness: A levang on a handle allows you to work mechanically without destroying the wood’s structure.
Effectiveness: Since soap is alkaline, algae and mold dislike the environment, which means brushing goes a long way toward keeping them away.
4. Get rid of sticky residue, pollen, and dust
One of the greatest advantages of soap compared with deck oil is how the surface behaves during summer. An oiled surface often becomes sticky when heated by the sun, causing pollen, road dust, and other dirt to stick and become baked on.
In contrast, a soaped surface becomes completely dry and satin-matte, preventing dirt from taking hold.
